Smith Family from top to bottom Adrian, Camryn, Colby & Travise Smith
Our Ah-HA! Moment wasn't some lightning bolt or a loud voice from the sky that said something. It was a combination of things that we know were instrumented by God for that season in our lives.
Our Pastor, Teresa Bufford, was teaching a Bible Study entitled ‘Owe No Man Nothing, but Love’ Romans 13:8. At the same time my husband, Adrian, turned on the radio and heard a man named Dave Ramsey saying the same thing in the words of "Live Debt Free.” Adrian came home, told me about the radio program and asked me to listen. I was hooked immediately.
Both Dave and our Pastor were telling us a lot of what we already knew, but it was the confirmation and conviction we needed to move forward towards being able to provide a substantial legacy for our children Proverbs 13:22 . The lifestyle we were living wasn't going to leave them a legacy of anything other than debt and despair. We were trying to keep up with the Jones and didn't even realize it.
We made a decision that day that we were going to do whatever it took to handle our finances according to biblical principals, even if it meant doing things we didn't want to, but knew were right. We decided to live our lives debt free...to “owe no man nothing, but love.”
The changes had to begin with US, and they had to start NOW.
At this time we had about $172,000 of debt...I was at home caring for two toddlers and Adrian was working a full time job. I picked up freelance jobs, we sold everything that wasn't nailed down, and Adrian picked up a second job to help pay off the debt. The most important thing we did was continue to tithe on ALL increase. We gave like we hadn't given before and we moved when the Holy Spirit said move.
It wasn't easy and many times we didn't think we could, but in 29 months we were out of $172,000 of debt because we were obedient to what God said. We were Disciplined, Dedicated and Determined to change our lives!
