The RULE of 24:
Before you make a purchase use the 24 hour rule.
I am often amazed at the fact that people don't know that there is a fundamental difference between “being able to pay for something” and “being able to afford it.”
Years ago, I drove a brand-new, fully-loaded, shiny black Lincoln Navigator. At the time, the Navigator was new to the auto scene and I just HAD to be one of the first people to have it! The ride was smooth and I looked even smoother driving it.
We made our payments on time every month, but really, we couldn't afford it. We also didn't need it as we had two other perfectly good cars sitting in the driveway. I remember almost crying when it was time to pay for it each month, thinking about how many other ways I could be using that money that God entrusted to me. Proverbs 15:27
I could have put those payments toward all of the other debt we had racked up. I could have saved that money for the unforeseen and unexpected instead of relying on credit. I could have tithed more at church...monies which would have been used to help in our community.
Once we had our “Ah-HA!” moment, we sold it and never looked back.
Being able to afford something means that after you have paid for it, you are not stressed out, upset or worried because everything else is paid for, your savings are growing and so are your tithes.
Of course the Lincoln Navigator may not be what you can't afford...it may be a purse that you charged, a car that you leased or a home that is 100% financed.
Think for a moment...What items do you have that you can pay for, but you can't afford?
